Any candidates NOT taking the examination for the FIRST time should notify me to this effect.
- The examination is in two parts, one each to be taken on Thursday, April 6 (10 am - 1 pm), and Friday, April 7 (1:30 pm - 3:30 pm).
- The examination will be taken in Room 115 Sitterson.
- Thursday covers Comp. 202, 204, 206. Total time, 3 hours.
- Friday, covers Comp. 203, 205. Total time, 2 hours.
- You are allowed 60 minutes per question (the questions are nominally 45 minutes long---this is how long a well-prepared student, who sees how to do the question, is supposed to take to do it!). You may apportion your total time among questions, each day, in any way you wish.
- When you have used your allotted time, each day, you must hand in your answers and questions, and leave the examination room. You may not discuss any particular question or answer with anyone, unless and until that question has been published by the Department.
- The test is closed book and closed notes with the exception of one 8.5" x 11" two-sided crib-sheet. You may bring a different crib sheet (but only one) on each day of the exam. You may include whatever data you wish on these crib-sheets.
- You may not use a computer. However, the faculty does not wish to test students on their ability to do arithmetic or look up tables. You may use a hand calculator ("scientific calculator") for numeric calculations (e.g., +, -, *, /, powers, sqrt, sin, cos, exp, log, etc.). You may use a programmable calculator, but only to perform these numeric calculations. You may NOT program it either before or during the examination. The use of graphing and other capabilities above and beyond the basic numeric calculations is specifically prohibited also.
- If you encounter what appears to be a typographical error or ambiguity in a question, do not attempt to contact the author(s) or an Examination Committee member. Instead, state a reasonable, nontrivializing assumption and proceed.
- Each paper will be graded, independently and concurrently, by two faculty members. To make this possible, the graders will be furnished photocopies of your answers.
