"Even a Dirtster can install FreeBSD 2.2.8-CAM - A UNC-DIRT Graduate Student's Guide to Installing FreeBSD" by Arun Moorthy and Mark Parris Wed Dec 23 02:47:20 EST 1998 before you start: - know the name you're going to assign this machine and its ip address. - know how much memory this machine has. - know how much disk space (and how many drives) the machine has. 0. Make sure the machine is on the 137 network 1. Insert Floppy ftp://tyagi/pub/FreeBSD/floppies/boot.flp (for notes on making a boot floppy see FAQ/install.html) 2. Power on 3. Hit ENTER or Q when prompted for configuring the kernel/devices (in other words you're choosing the "Skip Kernel Configuration..." option) 4. You should see the /stand/sysinstall main menu after a while. If you dont see this or you believe there is cause for alarm, double-check with someone else (pref. Mark/Arun). If you do see the /stand/sysinstall menu and you think everything is OK, go to Step 5. 5. Go to options screen: set release to "none" set media type to ftp, url=ftp://tyagi137/pub/FreeBSD/ next screen: pick interface - xl0/fxp0 whatever next screen: set host, domain, gateway, name server,IP,netmask Example: roadrunner, cs.unc.edu, 152.2.254.254, 152.2.128.87, 152.2.137.38, 255.255.0.0, HIT "OK" (use nslookup on another machine if necessary to get the IP) Back in main options screen now - Hit "Q" 6. Now in main menu. Choose "5" - "Novice" 7. Read the next screen: Hit OK (if the machine has multiple drives select the primary drive '0') enter fdisk screen. Delete all slices on primary drive. Create a single slice - Hit "A". Hit "YES" for "True Partition Entry" Hit "Q". On next screen - "BootMgr" needed. (Use Arrow keys to move and "Space" to select). Hit "OK". Message displayed. Read and Hit "OK". Now to create partitions: / - 128M (allow room for other kernels) /var - 128M swap - 320M (2.5 times the amount of memory is a good rule of thumb) /usr - All thats left Hit "Q" to accept. 8. Select USER distribution. Use SPACE to select. Will jump to another screen - DES screen. Hit OK and choose "des" using space. Then Exit back to previous menu. 9. NO to Ports. 10. Hit "OK" when last warning notice displayed. 11. Wait for Congratulations screen to appear. (For most machines these are the settings you want. If you are setting up a router or NFS server you may set things differently; you can always come back later and correct things.) 12. NO to IP Gateway 13. NO to anonymous FTP 14. NO to NFS server 15. YES to NFS client 16. YES to System Console setting - Configure Screen Saver; Pick "snake". Choose timeout of 300 seconds - OK and exit 17. YES to Timezone: - NO to UTC - Select region (2,45,1). OK. 18. YES to mouse - Type is Auto - Port is PS/2 (/dev/psm0) - Exit/OK 19. NO to packages 20. NO to initial user accounts 21. YES to root password - DiRT root word here 22. NO to Register System 23. NO to Last chance 24. Exit Install and remove floppy. 25. Wait for reboot and see that everything is OK (login as root and take a look). You'll have to hit F1 for FreeBSD to boot up. Stick a label on the machine with the following info: hostname, IP, FreeBSd version, where plugged into rack. (look at one of the other machines to get an idea of what must go on the label). CONGRATULATIONS. You've done it. Pick up the phone and call all other Dirtsters (use 411 on a dept machine to find home phone numbers) and tell them about it (esp. if install being done at 1:30 AM or later in the morning). Now see notes on "setting_up a new FreeBSD machine from the DiRT FAQ". (setting_up.html in this directory.)
