Composition of M.S. Exam and Thesis Committees

Only M.S. students who elect to write a thesis or who elect an oral comprehensive exam need to form a faculty exam or guidance committee.

Committees for M.S. Oral Exams and M.S. Thesis guidance are appointed by the Director of Graduate Studies based on nomination by the student using form CS-5.

M.S. committees normally consist of three members (including the thesis advisor, if any). At least two committee members must be full members of the Graduate Faculty, and at least one committee member must hold the rank of Associate Professor or higher.

As a rule, all regular and research faculty in Computer Science are full members of the graduate faculty. The other categories of membership are Limited and Special and are used when non-faculty persons are enlisted for service on guidance committees. Check with the Department's Administrative Manager if there is any doubt about the status of potential committee members.
