COMP 396 [090]: Research in Computer Science
(1 - 3 hours)

Last update: 10 July 1995

COMP 396 is not regularly scheduled. Offerings are agreed to on a case-by-case basis between a student and a faculty member.

To set up a COMP 396 section, a project definition should be negotiated between a faculty member and a student. Then, the faculty member should send to the Associate Chairman for Academic Affairs a request for creation of a COMP 396 section including the following information:

  • student name and ID number
  • number of credit hours wanted
  • a short project title
  • a summary of the project to be undertaken (Suggestion: have the student write this and edit it before forwarding to the Associate Chair)

Whether a final oral presentation of the project is required, and to what audience is will be presented will be negotiated between the student and instructor, but a final oral presentation of the project and a written project report are both *strongly* encouraged.

The Associate Chairman will assign a section number and subtitle (something like the project title) and will keep the project description on file. In conjunction with the Registration Coordinator, the Associate Chairman will arrange for the section to be created and for the student to be enrolled electronically. No further action is required from the student.

If the faculty member will be advising more than one COMP 396 project, then they will be established as one section with multiple enrollees, perhaps with different credit hours.

The project will then be conducted as for a regular course. A regular course grade will be assigned by the faculty advisor. A grade of B or better is required for this project to satisfy the Honors Project requirement for graduation with Honors or Highest Honors.
