The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of Computer Science FALL 1995 COURSE OFFERING Comp 190-025: World Wide Web and the Internet Tuesday/Thursday 2:00-3:15, Sitterson 011 Instructor: John B. Smith Ride (and understand) the rocket! The World Wide Web is currently growing exponentially. Use this course to learn the Web and understand the technology on which it is based. The course will include five components. First, students will learn to navigate the Web and develop knowledge of a variety of information sources. They will also learn both techniques and principles for creating their own Web pages and information structures. Second, students will develop in-depth knowledge of a particular topic, build a "guru" web that organizes and presents that knowledge, and link that structure into an evolving class web. Third, students will carry out several web-related programming projects, including image maps, forms, and scripts. Fourth, the class will examine the architecture of the Web and the Internet resources on which it relies. This technology will be compared with several other systems in order to explore inherent limitations and possibilities for future development. Finally, the class will consider some of the social and economic implications of the Web.
