The following link is a spreadsheet to compute your grade. it is the one that I will use to compute the final grade. The extra credit labs are added points to the labs points, but you can not earn more than 25 points for labs. The extra credit assignments are added points to the assignments points, but you can not earn more than 50 points for assignments. The unused late points are added to the total. spreadsheet.
There are 13 assignments planned in the course. There will be 5 web assignments, 5 spreadsheet/web assignments and 3 javascript/web assignments. The spreadsheet assignments will be accompanied by a simple web site where you will post the results of your spreadsheet work. If there are fewer assignments given, the percentages will remain the same and each assignment will be worth a higher percentage. (This may happen because of cancelled classes or slower than expected progress.) Assignments will generally be due 10 pm on Sunday but specific due dates are posted on the calendar.
Assignment deadline change: Beginning with Assignment 6 (the first Excel assignment) assignments will generally be due 3:30 pm on Tuesday. Specific due dates will continue to be posted on the calendar.
All web assignments and quizzes will be turned in by posting on the UNC web site under your onyen with the name that is given in the assignment. (We will go over this the first week of classes.) I will be checking these assignments at the due time. If it is not properly posted, it is late. Grades and comments will be returned through Sakai.
All non-web assignments and quizzes are to be turned in electronically, using Sakai. All non-web assignments are due at 10 pm on the identified date and are to be turned in electronically, using Sakai. Sakai identifies assignments that are turned in late and I will use its definition of late.
You have 3 late "days" that you may use on any assignment. A late day is defined as the next class. You may use no more than 1 free late for an assignment. If you are out of late days, the assignment may be turned in before the next class with a maximum value of 50%. Assignments will not be accepted after that. Late days that are not used will be added as points to your grade. These points will be added directly to your score, after it has been converted to a percentage. The point basis for the course is planned to be 100 points but plans sometimes change during the semester and that number may change. For example, if we were to eliminate a quiz because of inclement weather, the basis would be 99 points and the unused lates would be added after your grade has been converted to a percentage. (This explanation is also important for the first spreadsheet assignment.) In case of illness, accident, and family emergencies that are discussed with me in a timely fashion, late days need not be used.
There are expected to be 25 labs that will be given during the semester. Lab sessions will be the last 25 minutes of class. While the intent is to be able to finish in that time, you will not always be able to complete them in that time. In case this is insufficient time, you will have until 10 pm that day to turn in the quiz. Labs comprise 25% of your grade.
Lab assignments will be handed out during class and may only be made up in case of extenuating circumstances or university-sanctoned absences.
Unless otherwise stated, each of the assignments and quizzes is based on 10 points and only integer values will be used. The assignments in total are worth 50% of your grade each. Each assignment is worth 3-5%. Because there is a start up learning curve, earlier assignments will be counted less. Exact percentages will be posted with assignments. The project and final exam will be based on 20 points and each are worth 15% and 10% of your grade respectively.
