Lab 19: North Carolina Demographics

For Lab 19, you are to import data from the web into a spreadsheet, graph the information, and produce a web page with the graph. You are to upload the web page as index.html in a folder called Lab19. to isis and submit the spreadsheet to Sakai.

You are to retrieve the table of economic characteristics from http://www.northcarolina.com/demographics.html. To be clear, the lines that you are to pick up are Median Household Income, Per Capita Income, in Labor Force, and Families below poverty level.

You are then to create a bar graph of the first two data rows (Median Household Income and Per Capita Income). However, in order to get the data in an appropriate form to compare North Carolina and the United States, you need to transpose the data (that is interchange the columns and rows). You can do this with a paste transpose or you can do it within the graph if you select chart type first and then select the data. Specifically there are to be two pairs of columns (one for Median Household Income and one for Per Capita Income) with a column for North Carolina and a column for the United States. The graph should include a title "NC vs. US Income".

You are then to convert the graphs into a format that can be used on a web page: it is to be saved as a .png or .gif file. You are then to create a web page that displays the table graph. The web page and the image should be in a folder called Lab19 and the web page is to be named index.html. You are to upload this folder to your isis account. Thus the page will be accessed by www.unc.edu/~onyen/Lab19.
