Komodo Editor is a piece of software that helps you build web pages more easily. It helps you with getting the syntax correct and lets you look at your work as you go.
Download Komodo Editor from http://www.activestate.com/komodo-edit/downloads. You do not need to register for the newsletter. You do not want the IDE. At some point, it may ask you if you want a free trial of the IDE. This means that you are looking at the wrong software. You just want the editor.
Filezilla is a piece of software that will let you transfer files between your machine and another machine. It uses a protocol called "Secure File Transfer Protocol" of SFTP. You don't need to know anything about SFTP.
Download Filezilla from http://filezilla-project.org/. You only want the client, not the server.
When you are ready to use Filezilla, you will be asked to fill in 4 fields to identify where you want to transfer your files. Fill in the fields as follow:
You only need to fill these in the first time that you use Filezilla. After that, you can use the down arrow after "Quickconnect" and just choice isis.
The left side of the Filezilla screen is the files on YOUR computer. The right side of the screen is the files on the SERVER. You will be editing locally and then moving the files to the server using Filezilla (drag and drop or right click and upload).
If you want to save the exact location of the files that you will be using, you can use "Bookmarks" in the menu bar and save the locations. Once you have it set up properly, simply name the current settings.
To get at Bookmarks on a Mac:
when you open Filezilla, you can see the Site Manager icon
at the leftmost of the top menu bar
(circled in the screenshot below).
Inside Site Manager, you can use the "New Site" button
to store your favorate sites, e.g. isis.unc.edu.
Bookmarks have to be associated with stored sites,
so once you store a site in Site Manager,
the "New Bookmark" button will be activated,
and now you can bookmark both local and remote locations,
which will be stored under each stored site.
In order to make life easier, you should maintain an image of the server file structure on your machine. You will want a FOLDER under YOUR public_html for every assignment and quiz that you upload. The primary page within that folder will be index.html. The browser always assumes that it is going to that page. Taking advantage of that assumption simplifies the url that we use.
This is a web site that we will be using. No download required. We will be using this site to manipulate photos for web pages. You may use any photo editing software that you want. I identifeid this one because it is recommended by CNET, it does not use Flash, and has no limit on picture size. It's resolution is not as great as other sites, but is sufficient for use on web pages.
While all the principles and skills you are learning are applicable to any spreadsheet software, there are minor differences between them and the class presentations will all be based on Excel. If you need to use different software, please speak to the instructor before we begin working on spreadsheets.
