Dr. Guido Gerig
In this, his first year at UNC, Dr. Guido Gerig taught the graduate course on Image Analysis, COMP 254. He frequently used example programs that were derived solely to instruct the class. He always remembered to remind the students why they were learning the current material, and his explanations were fantastic. Dr. Gerig also answered students' questions in an extremely respectful and instructional manner.

Dr. Gerig's style of teaching is truly one of a servant to the students. Incredibly humble and always checking on student concerns, he has made COMP 254 instructive, truly enjoyable, and extremely challenging.

Dr. Gyula Mago
Dr. Gyula Mago has taken the graduate core course on Computer Architecture, COMP 206, and made it his own. Dr. Mago has put his unique stamp on COMP 206, explaining what is important, distinguishing between fact and opinion, giving his own historical perspective, and providing a much needed framework on which to hang the various facts and principles.

His printed handouts and homework assignments comprise a textbook unto themselves, supplementing the standard text. Within the handouts are tables, diagrams, rules of thumb, and new ways of looking at the material that make the course come alive. Dr. Mago has often mentioned that his goal in creating the supplemental materials is to provide something the student can come back to, perhaps years later.

Dr. Mago's office hours are extremely well attended, with students often camped out in the hallways, either waiting to get in, or listening from a perch near the door. One is always invited to come in, sit down, and ask questions. It is like being in his home, complete with red-checkered tablecloth.

But beyond the details and specifics is the big picture. Students come away from Dr. Mago's classes feeling privileged to have known a great teacher and a great human being. Dr. Mago's relentless spirit is what shines through the equations and diagrams, and it is especially for that we choose to recognize him today.
