Guido Gerig
Dr. Gerig began research in the area of medical image analysis in 1985 at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. Since then, he has led a large number of national and international projects with close interdisciplinary cooperation between medicine, engineering, industry, and computer science. He has spent several research leaves as a visiting assistant professor at the Brigham and Women's Hospital at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Gerig is a member of the editorial board of the journal Medical Image Analysis, published by Oxford University Press. He has served on the committees of a number of computer vision and image analysis conferences and workshops. Dr. Gerig is motivated by a number of challenging problems in medical image analysis. One important issue he is researching is the segmentation, modeling and morphometric analysis of structures extracted from 3D image data and 3D time series obtained from radiology. His current focus is on shape-based 3D object representation for automated object extraction and shape analysis of brain structures for studying neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative changes in the human brain in depression, and in diseases such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer's, and multiple sclerosis.
