Gyula A. Mago
Gyula A. Mago is professor emeritus of computer science
at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He
retired in 1999, after 29 years on the faculty. Originally from
Hungary, Dr. Mago received a diploma in engineering in 1962
from the Polytechnical University of Budapest, then joined its
faculty as an assistant professor. He joined UNC-Chapel Hill
in 1970, after receiving his Ph.D. in computer science from
Cambridge University. His research interests have included
computer architecture, parallel computation, and programming
languages. He was one of the principal developers of the FFP
machine, a small-grain parallel reduction computer that could
be programmed easily and flexibly, without unduly sacrificing
its performance potential. In addition to his many papers over
the years, he was issued a patent, "Cellular Network of
Processors" (U.S. Patent No. 4,251,861), in 1981.
