Statement of Practice
- The Faculty Honors
pages includes recognition for distinguished work
already completed.
- The Faculty Service
pages include service for external professional organizations.
- The
Grants, Contracts, Gifts, and Awards page includes information
about funding or equipment to do subsequent research.
Faculty Honors Pages
Maintained by: Publications Manager
Includes recognition for distinguished work
already completed. Examples:
- National Medal of Technology
- Distinguished Service awards
- awards from scientific organizations
- member of distinguished national or international academies
- honorary doctorates
- fellowships
- named professorships
- Best Paper awards
- NSF Career award
- teaching awards
Not included:
- Awards received while a student, such as Phi Beta Kappa, or
Alumni Fellowship
- Service functions, such as serving on a board, as editor of
a journal, etc.; these should be listed on Service pages
- Funding or equipment received to do subsequent
research; these should be listed on the
Grants, Contracts, Gifts, and Awards page (see below)
A few exceptions may occur, to be approved by the Chairman.
Examples: very prestigious grants that are named, such as
Fullbright, PYI, Sloan Foundation, NIH Career Award, Packard.
Such grants will be listed both on the Faculty Honors
page and on the Grants, Contracts, Gifts, and Awards page.
Order:
- The default is inverse chronological order. Exceptions may be
requested by individual faculty members. For example, one may
prefer to list honors in order of importance.
- Dates will be included at the end of each entry, as follows:
- Single year: 19XX
- Period: from 19XX through 19XX
- Ongoing: since 19XX
Faculty Service Pages
Maintained by: Publications Manager
Includes such services as:
- conference or other chair
- journal/book editor
- board member
- University-wide committee member
- talks to non-computer-professional groups (such as
civic groups, high schools, etc., as a computer scientist
(will be included as one item)
- guest lecturer outside the department, as computer scientist
(will be included as one item)
- civic board member if as computer scientist
(will be included as one item)
- department or other reviewer (will be included as one item)
- referee (will be included as one item)
Not Included:
- work considered to be research
- talks at conferences or at PI meetings
- talks and guest lectures within the department
- member, department committee
- member, civic clubs or church groups or charitable
organizations (unless invited to serve on a civic
board as computer scientist). Excludes treasurer of
Rotary Club, volunteer for Heart Fund, etc.
- service for private companies, unless a faculty member
specifically instructs it to be included (per consultation
with Chairman, 2 June 1997)
Order:

Includes:
- Funding or equipment to do subsequent research.

- NIH and NSF grants
- Faculty Research Awards
- University Research Council (URC)
- Junior Faculty Development Award, UNC
- Corporate gifts

Order:
Guidelines: Adopted at Meeting with Chairman, Associate
Chairman for Academic Affairs, and the Publications Staff, 24 June
1996; some revisions made 29 May 1997. Other revisions noted and
dated.
Note: Should specific questions arise, the Department
Chairman will determine what items are included/excluded within a
particular category/list.
Notes to Publications Staff and Content Maintainers:
- A brief definition of pertinent policies and guidelines will be
included as part of the routine solicitation for updates.
- Occasionally a faculty member's service on a committee
will be confidential and should not appear on the web.
Honors and Service Web pages are updated, at minimum, each June/July
from pertinent information that was gathered by the Administrative
Manager to the Chairmen for the Dean's annual report and shared with the
Publications Manager. The faculty are then asked by the Publications
Manager to review their updated Web pages for accuracy/completeness.
