  Photo Copyrights

Statement of Policy

  1. Reprint permission and credit form for photographs should be negotiated individually between the principal investigator of the project and the copyright owner, with the assistance of the Publications Manager. In general, external photographers (non University or State employees) are the copyright owners.
  2. The Copyright symbol should be included wherever possible.
Background
On occasion, the photographer or copyright owner will sell us the copyright to a specific photo and provide the negative.

In most cases, photographers have allowed the department to re-use photographs for internal, non-profit purposes. For example:

  • Department advertising (brochures, newsletters, web pages)
  • Not-for-profit publications (excludes popular magazines such as Nature, Science, Time, Newsweek)
  • Conference papers and professional journals
  • Wall photos for Sitterson Hall
The Publications Office has information on file about specific arrangements with individual photographers and agreements concerning specific photographs.

Policy discussed and adopted February 1992 with revisions in 1994.
