Registered Trademarks
Statement of Policy
- Variations of university trademarks, such as the Old Well,
are allowed for internal purposes only, as long as they are
easily recognizable.
- The Registered trademark symbol (encircled R) should be
included with the use of any registered trademarks.
- Department members should consult with the UNC-Chapel Hill
Licensing Office before using a variation of the University's
registered trademarks for external purposes.
- Variations of university trademarks cannot be used with
products for sale.
- Any substantive changes to our letterhead requires approval from
the UNC Licensing Office.
Notes
Notes from conversation with a UNC-Chapel Hill Licensing Officer,
17 June 1997:
- With regard to the many variations made on the Old Well
(e.g., those that have been changed and that are distinctly
associated with a particular department, such as the one
used by Human Resources):
We are allowed to use such variations--including those that we
create ourselves--for internal purposes only (but not with products
for sale), as long as they are recognizable as our Old Well.
For example, our 3D version is fine, as is the version in which
the columns are formed by the letters U N C.
- The UNC Printing Office is the best resource for electronic
versions.
Editor's note: if we decide to use a variation that
we did not create, we should find out if a particular department
created it and adopted it as their own department's
logo--in which case we may not wish to use it.
- There is at least one version of the Old Well that is a Registered
trademark (like other symbols: Tar Heel, etc. used in sports
and P.E). That Old Well illustration is on file with the
Publications Manager. Whenever we use official Registered
trademarks (such as the Old Well), we should include the
Registered mark (encircled R) with it. The R symbol can be
small, as long as it's legible. Even if some departments do
not routinely include the Registered symbol for internal
purposes, the Licensing Officer strongly encourages us to do so.
- We are encouraged to use the official Registered Old
Well for our all of our ongoing and long-term uses,
so there's less "dilution." However, we are not required
to use it for internal purposes such as our newsletters and
posters.
- Consult with the Licensing Office before changing department
letterhead.
