Bruce's Knots

This page shows 3D+time reconstructions of Dr. Bruce Cairns' hands tying knots.  Each reconstruction is a short sequence of 3D models shown using the following methods:

1)    Pair of stereo stills from a representative moment in the sequence (finished knot), displayed with the Java stereo applet from www.stereofoto.de.  For each knot, click on the button that looks like this: .  The stereo applet lets you select viewing modes such as anaglyphs, cross-eyed, wall-eyed, frame-sequential, etc.  Here is a user guide for the applet, accessible as well from the applet's "Help" menu.  Once you open one applet, you can use the PageUp/PageDown keys to cycle through all stereo pairs on this page.  The applet requires red-green or red-cyan anaglyph glasses to be worn with the red filter in front of the left eye.

2)    Dynamic VRML dataset that cycles through the entire sequence.  If you do not have a VRML plugin for your browser, you can download one here.  The VRML file contains an interactive VCR-like interface with self-explanatory controls.  If you stop the playback, you can drag the slider to any moment in the sequence and resume playback.

3)    Stereo AVI, Quicktime, and Windows Media movies of the entire sequence; these require red-cyan anaglyph glasses (red for the right eye, cyan for the left).  The AVI movies were created with VirtualDub 1.5.10 and the XviD MPEG-4 encoder; the Quicktime movies were created with Quicktime Pro 6.5 and the Sorenson Video 3 encoder; the Windows Media movies were created with Windows Media Encoder 9.  You can download the XviD codec here and the Quicktime plugin here.
