History of the Department of Computer Science's Recycling
Program
In 1990, Linda Houseman undertook the task of developing a recycling system that
would handle the waste of more than 200 people who work and study in Sitterson
Hall. Improving and expanding a system first begun by a handful of graduate students,
Linda researched and purchased the necessary materials. She also worked with the
University to create a recycling center just outside Sitterson Hall. The success
of her plans lies in the availability of recycling facilities and disbursement
of recycling duties. Convenience is important to encourage recycling: each floor
of Sitterson Hall has two sites where people can deposit glass, aluminum cans,
plastic bottles, newspaper, glossy paper, and corrugated cardboard.
The UNC Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling also contracts with an outside
vendor to pick up white and fiber paper from Sitterson Hall, and several bins
are placed around the building to collect those categories of paper.
