    Alumnus Computer Science account information

    Reviewed by Brian White 7/25/2012

The Computer Science department provides alumnus accounts to graduates of this department who:

    1. received a Masters or PhD degree from this department, or
    2. received a bachelors degree from this department and have worked for the department for at least two semesters.
    3. We may also make exceptions in special cases, e.g., for students who received a PhD from another UNC department and were advised by a CS faculty member, worked for a CS research group, and were housed in Sitterson or Brooks during their degree program.

Having an alumnus account allows you to log in and see how things are going on our systems and to maintain a small web page, perhaps with pointers to another site.  These accounts are limited to 400 MB of home directory space.  The accounts do not include cvs, playpen, or ftp space.  Optionally, they can include an account on the department's Google Apps domain, including an email account.

Graduate alumni from previous years who are interested in setting up an alumnus account or adding Google to their existing alumnus account should send email to help@cs.unc.edu.

Graduate alumni from the current year will simply keep their Google mail account, with no changes.

Undergraduate alumni from previous years who are interested in setting up an alumnus account or adding a department Google account, including Google mail, to their existing alumnus account, should send email to help@cs.unc.edu.

Undergraduate alumni from the current year who wish to have Google mail enabled for their account should send email to help@cs.unc.edu.

The only thing that will change about the AFS home directory is that the quota (maximum size to which the directory can grow) will be reduced to 400 MB.  Alumni must reduce their home directory disk usage to 400 MB within two months of receiving a message to that effect from the Computer Services Director (or two months after graduation, whichever is later) to retain their accounts.  If they have not done this, they will get an additional one-month warning, after which their account, including their Google mail, is deleted, if they don't get down to the 400 MB quota.

Note:  If we have to delete your account because it is over quota, we will back up your home directory only.   While Google provides substantial redundancy for your mail while you have an account, we do not back up Google mail when we delete your account, and once it is deleted it is gone forever, so be sure to get under the quota in the time period allowed.  Let us know if you need an extension; we can usually work something out.

For instructions on how to determine whether you are within the home directory quota, see here.
