Configuring Outlook for asmtp.cs.unc.edu
Configuring Outlook to use SMTP via asmtp.cs.unc.edu (authenticated SMTP).
The following steps make the assumption that an email account has already been setup, but you can use the same settings when establishing a new email account.
Click on Tools -> Email Accounts. Select 'View or change existing e-mail accounts'

Select the CS IMAP account from the list and click 'Change'

In the Internet E-Mail Settings (IMAP) dialog box, for the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field enter: 'asmtp.cs.unc.edu'.
Click on 'More Settings...'

Select 'Outgoing Server' tab. Check 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication'. Check 'Use same settings as my incoming mail server'. The incoming server settings should be set to your department login and password.

Under Outgoing server, check 'This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)'. Change the Outgoing server (SMTP) port number to 587.

Click OK. Click Next on E-Mail accounts dialog box. Click Finish.
Outlook is configured to use the department secure SMTP server. First time an Internet Security Warning about using an unverified security certificate will show up. Click on Yes.
