Dialing Local and Long Distance Calls
Instructions for making local and long distance calls

Making outgoing calls:

All Campus and UNC Hospital Centrex system numbers start with 919 and then have 445, 843, 914, 962, or 966 as the next three digits.
Operator assistance or information
Operator assistance or information (411) calls are considered a toll call and should be dialed using a long distance code. Send mail to help@cs.unc.edu to get a long distance code. To get operator assistance, enter your code and then dial 9+1+(area code)+555+1212.
Local calls:
Dial 9+area code+number Note: area code required for local and long distance calls.
Long distance calls:
To make a long distance call, dial 9+1+area code+number. Use this method for department business only. If you need to make a long distance personal call, then use a calling card or your cell phone.
International calls:
International calls require an authorization code. Send email to help@cs.unc.edu. To make an international call, enter your authorization code, and dial 9+011+country code+city code (if needed) + local number.
