Emergency Pager
Getting Computer Services support after normal working hours
Reviewed by Brian White 4/26/2012
The Computer Services emergency pager number is 919-216-1773. You can also reach the pager via email, use the number without dashes and @usamobility.net, but the text window doesn't hold many characters, so please be terse. Please use this number only in an emergency. (See below.)
This article describes the procedure for obtaining emergency support from the Computer Services staff during off hours. It also provides some mail-lists that may be of use for contacting members of our staff.
If the problem you are reporting can wait until normal working hours, please send email to help@cs.unc.edu describing your difficulty. You can send a copy of your message to facil-all@cs.unc.edu if you wish to alert the staff.
Otherwise, if you have a true emergency, call the Computer Services beeper at 919-216-1773 and leave us a voice message, including the phone number where you can be reached. (The pager number is on the department's quick reference phone list.) This is a local call from Chapel Hill; in Sitterson or Brooks, dial "9919" first and then the number. We will return your call as soon as possible, in 60 minutes or less (usually less).
You should ONLY CALL THIS NUMBER TO REPORT AN EMERGENCY. Certain events, if left unattended, can cause serious hardware damage, and Computer Services definitely needs to be alerted. These include air conditioning outages and power outages. These events would warrant a call no matter what time they occurred. We would also want to know if the exterior doors are not closing and locking properly. Other events should be real emergencies to justify a call, particularly late at night. Please note that our staff does not receive any extra pay for carrying or responding to the beeper, so please limit your calls for help to times when there is a true emergency that cannot wait for normal business hours.
Examples of events that are not emergencies include a single down workstation, a nonfunctioning printer, or anything else where there is a reasonable workaround or where it does not hurt to wait.
