    New Phone System

    New Phone System Information

    Reviewed by Brian White 6/11/2013

We have purchased a Voice over IP phone system based on the Switchvox 355 Appliance, along with 170 Digium phones.  Installation began June 5, and we expect to complete the transition before the beginning of the fall semester. There will be a training session, and we will send out a separate posting when that is scheduled.

David Musick with the help of our part time staff have setup the new phones for Computer Services staff, so everyone can begin using their new numbers. Unfortunately, you will need to dial all 10 digits since those numbers are on a different PBX. The department's new phone numbers will be in the range 919-590-6000 to 919-590-6249.  We have assigned numbers to faculty, staff, rooms, etc., and these are listed here.

The next group to be set up will be the other staff, and then faculty, and we will remove phones from student offices in early August.

Everyone will have the option of leaving an announcement-only voice message on the current system informing callers of their new number.  (We will provide information on how to do this.)  Students can leave a message that their phone is going away.  We will continue to run the current phone system into the fall to support these announcements, reducing the number of inbound and outbound lines to reduce costs.

Please note that you should also login to https://dir.unc.edu to change or delete your phone number in the campus online system.

On a related note, we will ask graduate students for a phone number where we can reach them, but they will have the option to request that number be for emergency use only and not publicized.
