Biography
Russell M. Taylor II is a research professor with a joint appointment in the departments of Computer Science, Physics and Astronomy, and the Curriculum in Applied and Materials Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received a B.S. in Mathematical Sciences with the Computer Science Option in 1989, an M.S. in 1991, and a Ph.D. in 1994 in Computer Science, all from UNC-Chapel Hill.
His research interests include scientific visualization, haptic display, virtual worlds and interactive 3D computer graphics. All of these come together in his roles as:
* Co-director of the Computer-Integrated Systems for Microscopy and Manipulation NIH Resource (cismm.org), a team of physicists, chemists, and computer scientists working together to develop improved interfaces, visualization, and analysis tools for scanned-probe and fluorescence microscopes.
* Visualization lead on the Models and Data Analysis Initiative (madai.us), a team of physicists, statisticians, and computer scientists who are developing tools for the visual analysis of high-dimensional ensemble visualizations.
He also directs the Biomedical Image Analysis Supercomputer ( www.cs.unc.edu/bass), which is a resource for NIH-funded researchers across campus.
