Abstract
We propose to address some fundamental research issues in modeling and rendering of large solid models for computer-aided design and virtual environments. Our goal is to develop efficient algorithms and systems, and demonstrate their performance on large environments composed of hundreds of thousands of primitives. The set of problems:
- Accurate algorithms for modeling physical objects using boolean operations.
- Hierarchical and multiresolution representations of models for fast display.
- Develop a robust system to compute boundary representation of solids defined using boolean combination based on exact arithmetic and perturbation methods.
- Interactive display of large scale polygonal, sculptured and solid models as well as terrain models on current graphics architectures.
The solid modeling system will be integrated with BRL-CAD. Furthermore, we will use our rendering algorithms for interactive display of large terrain models and battlefield visualization. Besides modeling and rendering, these algorithms and systems will have a significant impact on computer-aided design, robotics and physically-based modeling.
