Advice about applying to UNC
Every year I receive a bunch of emails from prospective students asking about information about applying to UNC. It is hard for me to reply to email individually so I have compiled a list of some of the commonly asked questions. Hope this helps!
These are my credentials what are my chances of making an admit?
As of the writing of this article students have no say in the admissions process. Furthuremore the chances of making an admit in any year is a function of the applicant pool that you are in.
What are my chances of making financial aid?
Again financial aid decisions are made by the department based on the funding situation for that year. Its hard to comment on this. Historically if you made an admit you were usually supported for the duration of your program. But this could change in coming years.
Who can I contact to ensure that I get financial aid?
Nobody can gurantee you financial aid before you make an admit. After you make an admit, you come to UNC where a Research Fair is held where you can interact with the professors, which is when the financial aid decisions are made
I am interested in this area, who can I contact?
Look at the faculty web-pages, they are the best indicator of what projects and areas the faculty are working on. If you feel strongly about a certain project contact faculty. Again dont expect them to reply, they are usually on lot more hectic schedules.
Okay read through this and I still have a question?
By all means mail! But be brief and to the point. Again if somebody does not reply immediately dont resend emails. It might be that the person is facing a deadline or any number of innumerable things that can come into his/her life. Be considerate!!
Good Luck!!!!
