April 1, 1990 The bathroom video security system has been installed in Sitterson Hall and is now operating. It was part of the original building plan, but its implementation was delayed until we could negotiate good equipment prices at the local KGB "Glasnost clearance sale." The system consists of ten cameras scattered in the bathrooms, primarily facing towards the stalls, and three slow recording VCR's. Most of the cameras are pretty obvious, but there are four (two on level 0 and two on level 1) disguised as soap dispensers. The tapes run for up to three days and are recycled about every two weeks. There is no audio recording. Department policy is that the tapes will be viewed if there has been a security problem, such as someone using the shower stalls when they are leaking. The tapes may also be used to fill in missing photos on the level 1 CSA photo directory board. While this video system will enhance bathroom security, it is just a part of our overall security system. And the most important part of that system is our people. Please continue to be alert to any potential security problems; lock your toilet stall doors, and if you see strangers in the bathroom after hours, tell them to go somewhere else. Remember, bathroom security requires everyone to remain vigilant. Don't get caught with your pants down.
