Local information

Getting around:

The city centre of York is small -- you can walk across it in 15-20 minutes. From the rail station to a hotel in the centre, it should be no more than 10 minutes by taxi, and most hotels can be reached by walking. That said, the centre can be pretty confusing the first time you encounter it! To get from the centre to the university, you can take the #4 bus from the rail station or Clifford Street; a return ticket is GBP 3, and the journey takes around 15 minutes. A taxi from the centre to the University should be around GBP 6.

The university's web-site also has a lot of information about visiting the university (maps, etc).

Flights:

It is probably easiest to fly to Manchester. There is a direct train from Manchester Airport to York every 30m or so (1h in the evening) and the average journey time is 1h 45m.

Leeds/Bradford is also close but you'll have to take a taxi/bus that will take you to the rail station at Leeds (~20'-infinity - depending on the traffic at Leeds) and from there you can catch a train to York (~30'). You can take a taxi direct to your hotel in York, but it won't be cheap (negotiate with the driver, or ask us and we can help you pre-book a taxi).

If you fly to London Heathrow, you'll need to take the Tube/Heathrow Express to get to London Kings Cross station where you can catch a train to York. The journey typically takes 3-3:30h. If you choose this route, try to book your train from London Kings Cross to York in advance on-line here, as buying your ticket on the day can be horrifically expensive. Other reasonably convenient airports for York include Newcastle and Durham Tees, but Manchester is the best-connected international airport.

From the train station in York, you can then take a taxi which will bring you to the Department of Computer Science in 10-15' or so.

Accommodation:

There are plenty of hotels in the city centre of York, but there are no hotels right near the university. It is most convenient to stay in the city centre, and take a bus or taxi to the University (or to walk once you know your way -- 20-30m walk).

Some hotels that are convenient in the city centre (all of these are very comfortable):

There are also budget options: two Travelodges and a Premier Inn. The above hotels are much better.

There are also lots of smaller bed-and-breakfasts that are cheaper. VisitYork is a good starting point for accommodation in York (large and small), as is Expedia.
