If the btech95 batch were to remember you for something what would that be? ----------------------------------------------------------------------- As first and foremost a hacker, a person who loves computers and is excited by them. Four years of jading at the hands of a monotonous IIT system has dulled my edge somewhat. A more relaxed and inquiry-oriented stay at a place where we do not want for facilities and don't have to go begging for accounts, i.e. a US university, is just what I need to bounce back. Anything you like and dislike about CS Deptt. IIT Delhi. -------------------------------------------------------- Like: The profs and their cooperative attitute which makes this the coolest & most flexible dept at IITD. Dislike: The earlier "permission denied" atmosphere about labs/accounts that is slowly disappearing now. Undergo a time warp and put yourself in the position of the class XIIth student who has just cleared JEE . Come back and consider yourself now. Have the 4 years here taken away or added anything to you ? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I have become equally comfortable speaking Hindi as English. I remember on my fresher's nite they asked me for the Hindi translation of IIT! Took half an hour of guessing to get it right...:( I have become very close to certain friends, shared a lot of my life with them, which was not the case in school. I have learnt to give & take and to be a reliable person. My keen, youthful enthusiasm for computers and my perception that I am the best have been ruthlesly eroded during these 4 years. Definitely I am a much more humble person going out than I was coming in. What is the easiest thing and the toughest thing to do in life ? ---------------------------------------------------------------- Easiest thing - to just keep "existing" doing whatever you normally do in life (i.e. get into a rut). Toughest thing - many tasks are tied for the top spot, including:- * Accepting your mistakes & owning up to them * Reaching out to a perfect stranger & making a difference in his/her life. * To let nothing whatsoever stop you in the line of duty when doing your job. * To force that brain-dead lump of grey cells to think of one more useless thing that is tied for the top spot of tough things :) My Prediction on the future of Computers in the next 50 years ------------------------------------------------------------- "I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." --Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM, 1943 "Computers in the future may weigh no more than 1.5 tons." --Popular Mechanics, 1949 "640K ought to be enough for anybody." --Bill Gates, 1981 It is stupid to make a prediction and then expect it to come true. Now shorn of this constraint of coming true, let me give my imagination free rein.... (Deepak Bandyopadhyay, 1999) * Ubiquitous computing - an information sphere around every person which is controlled by computers that talk among themselves & to the outside world. * Social hierarchy of computers - computers to fix / interact with other computers. * Computer hardware, along with software, to become free as it is a basic necessity. You'd pay for various optional services & conduct your daily financial transactions thru the computer. * Existing giants will have to adapt their strategy. The company who anticipates the market trend & has good collaboration with research labs, wins big. The one that does not, becomes history. Comments: --------- Nothing except - I LOVE YOU ALL. Never will there ever be a more unique, uncommon, brilliant and incorrigible bunch of computer scientists clustered so close together in these buildings. This batch was outstanding in every sense of the word, and its been great knowing you guys (a few tears are shed at this point. Feel them - genuine, not crocodile.) So... friends, go forth & multiply, and let there be a btech95 in every company, a btech95 offspring in every school! Let the mellifluous btech95 Lingo resound in a chat channel on every IRC server! Let the btech95s everywhere spread the message of love, cooperation and integrity to the human race. Friends ITS OUR TURN AT THE CREASE NOW - LETS GIVE IT A GOOD INNINGS !!! I shall end with a quote from the Dune series by Frank Herbert - "LONG LIVE THE FIGHTERS !!!"
