Media Space

A media space

allows users to ``walk'' to distributed rooms, thereby combining video conferencing with the MUD paradigm of navigating through rooms. Images captured by cameras in the rooms of participants in this space are switched by server software executing on one of the workstations. Authorized participants can ask the server to bring up images of remote rooms on their workstations, thereby becoming aware of their activities, much as a user is aware of the activities of a colocated collaborator whose office door is open. This is useful, for instance, when a user wishes to determine is a collaborator can be interrupted.
