Explanation of grade assignments in Comp 110-001, Fall 2012 The following is the spreadsheet entry for your grades this semester. Student ID Student Name In Class M1 M2 F P1 P2 P3 P4 P5 P6 P7 P8 P9 Course Grade Maximum possible 10 100 70 246 100 Average 8.0 78.7 41.6 182.9 73.20 Student ID Student name 7 79 36 181 1 1 1 6 9 10 8 8 10 75.41 Note that the average grades are (a little) artificially low due to 0s being counted for students still registered for the class, but they have actually dropped the course (i.e no letter grade assigned to them). Explanation of grading columns In Class - total of in-class exercises and lab grades. Lowest 2 grades are dropped. M1 - First Test M2 - Second Test adjusted for Second Chance Test F - Final Exam P1 - P9 - Programming assignments Course Grade - compilation of all graded assignments. This is the number that is used for assignment of letter grades. The individual components of the Course Grade are: 30% Programs 10% First Test 15% Second Test 30% Final Exam 15% Lab exercises, in class assignments After assigning letter grades based on the Course Grade, I examine each student's grades to determine if this is the fair grade for them. I look to increase (not decrease) their letter grade based on a sinlge low test grade, a single missing assignment, clearly improved performance during the semester (i.e. "Did the get it by the end of the course despite a very poor start to this course."). The distribution of final letter grades is: 20 A 2 A- 11 B+ 13 B 15 B- 6 C+ 11 C 2 C- 9 lower I would be glad to go over your final exam and course grading with you. Stop by at the start of the next semester. Have a good break, Kye Hedlund
