Genus Prenolepis (Subfamily Formicinae) - Online Catalog of Ants of North America

Genus Prenolepis (Formicinae)

Prenolepis imparis arizonica Wheeler. This subspecies is found only in southern AZ.

Prenolepis imparis coloradensis Wheeler.

Prenolepis imparis imparis (Say). This species represents an ancient formicid stock. It is almost indistinguishable from P. henschei Mayr, a fossil ant of the Lower Oligocene Tertiary period, so that its morphology has been virtually unchanged in the past 25-30 million years (Wheeler, 1930c: 1). Its unusual adaptation to cold weather foraging may represent a retreat in the face of competition from other ants.
