Genus Proformica (Formicinae)

Ruzsky, 1902d: 13 (as subgenus of Formica)
. Type species: Formica nasuta Nylander, by monotypy. Proformica raised to genus: Bondroit, 1918: 40. Also described as new by Ruzsky, 1903b: 303.
- OVERVIEW.
Genus Proformica is closely related to genus Formica, and it can be highly abundant in xeric habitats (Hödobler, B. & Wilson, 1990: 458). The nests are usually small consisting of a few hundred workers and a single ergatoid queen. There are true repletes which is unique in Formicini.
- DISTRIBUTION.
Proformica has a patchy distribution from Mongolia through central Asia, Caucasus, Balkans to Spain.
- ZOOGEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS. Palearctic.
