Genus Hypoponera (Subfamily Ponerinae) - Online Catalog of Ants of North America

Genus Hypoponera (Ponerinae)

Hypoponera gleadowi (Forel). This is apparently a widespread tramp species and is quite possibly introduced into North America (Smith, D.R. 1979: 1342).

Hypoponera inexorata (Wheeler). This species is uncommon but widely distributed. It is probably subterranean which may account for it being infrequently collected (M. Deyrup, personal communication).

Hypoponera opaciceps (Mayr). This species is similar to H. opacior but less common. In Florida it is a water loving species found in litter and grass tussocks, often at the edges of marshes (Van Pelt, 1958: 5-6, M. Deyrup, personal communication).

Hypoponera opacior (Forel). This is the most common member of this genus. It is most commonly found by litter sifting or Berlese funnel extraction. In North Carolina it prefers mesic, often shaded habitats. In Florida it occupies a wide range of habitats from extremely dry, sandy locations to mesic woodlands (M. Deyrup, personal communication).

Hypoponera punctatissima (Roger). This species is nearly cosmopolitan in warmer parts of world. It is possibly introduced and probably of African origin (Smith, D.R. 1979: 1343).
