Essential Refactorings

This is a list of the most important refactorings used in Comp 401 / 410. It is a subset of the refactorings in the "official" list

• Bundle together data by creating a new class
• Consolidate Conditional Expression
• Decompose Conditional
• Encapsulate Field - private + gettrs and settrs
• Extract Method - BoundedBag find method
• Extract Superclass - Shape - Rectangle - Circle
• Introduce Assertion
• Introduce Explaining Variable
• Rename - a class, method , parameter, local variable, etc. This is the most common refactoring and perhaps the most important. Note that Eclipse can help with this - see Refactor/Rename. This is a smart version of the replaceAll command in any text editor.
• Replace Conditional with Polymorphism
• Replace Magic Number with Symbolic Constant
• Replace Nested Conditional with Guard Clauses
• Reverse Conditional
• Split Temporary Variable
