Switch configurations in the gigabit experimental network.

• Each of the 135 and the 136 has 3 switches: a small unmanageble 3Com switch, an Intel switch, and a larger 3Com switch. Jay has tried to keep the 2 networks symmetric.
• The Intel switches should have all ports configured at 100Mbps full-duplex and autonegotiation disabled. The uplink is 1000Mbps full-duplex. Here's a summary:

• The large 3Com switches should have port 1-9 configured at 100Mbps full-duplex and autonegotiation disabled. Port 10 should be configured for autonegotiation (this port needs to be at 1000Mbps but I can't seem to force it to this mode. However, if this port is configured for autonegotiation, it ends up running at 1000Mbps, which is what we want). Here's a summary:

• Ports 11-13 of the large 3Com switch (135) and ports 12 of the large 3Com switch (136) are used for uplinks with routers. David takes care of them.
• Ports 14-16 of the large 3Com switches are used for uplinks with the routers. Jay takes care of them. (Maybe she can say something here...)
• The small 3Com switches are not configurable. However, if configurations of the other switches are fine, the LEDs of the small 3Com switches should indicate that the first five ports run at 100Mbps full-duplex and the sixth port runs at 1000Mbps full-duplex.
• All the end systems are forced to configure their NICs at 100Mbps full-duplex. Please don't modify /etc/rc.local or swap the machines.
• Follow up on Don's suggestion for configuration scripts: Because the large 3Com switches and the Intel switches have an IP address, it might be possible to log on to the switches via telnet, e.g. using Perl, to perform the configurations. The configurations scripts would then be integrated into the setupnet script. I'll look into this when I have more time.
