STC's Telecollaborative Environments
Scene Acquisition
We feel that users of a telecollaborative environment will feel a
greater sense of presence if we can recreate their surroundings in a
virtual workspace like VRapp. For this goal, accurate and high
resolution scene acquisition is necessary. Researchers Radim Sara and
Ruzena Bajcsy at the University of Pennsylvania have been working for
many years on the problem of accurate and efficient scene acquisition
for computer vision. Radim used their camera rig and algorithms to
reconstuct his office. A description of the process is here

One of the major problems for real-time display of the environment is
the tremendous amount of data. The office scene has millions of points
making it impossible for current hardware to render in real-time. We
in the STC hope to develop algorithms and hardware to deal with this problem.
