Cook, Robert L., "Stochastic Sampling in Computer Graphics", TOG 1986. This is a follow-on to the previous paper: Cook, Porter, Carpenter, "Distributed Ray Tracing", SIGGRAPH 84.

I'd suggest you also read Turner Whitted's seminal paper, "An improved illumination model for shaded display", Communications of the ACM, June 1980.
