Sample dataset (please provide an image of this one with your results). Look in the assignment web page for parser code.
Read Greenberg, et. al., A Framework for Realistic Image Synthesis, SIGGRAPH 97. Available as PDF at Cornell or locally.

Whitted, Turner, "An Improved Illumination Model for Shaded Display", CACM, June 1980. Scanned PDF, and a paper copy in reading room.
Additional resources: Andrew Glassner's ray tracing book (on reserve, call # T385 .I549 1989), Eric Haines' ray-intersection algorithms (I've put a copy in reading room) from a SIGGRAPH 88 course. Pete Shirley has a new book (published 2000) on ray tracing, but the library doesn't seem to own a copy yet. There's a wealth of information in the archives of Ray Tracing News, edited by Eric Haines.
