Students, Past and Present
Here are some of the students with whom I've had the pleasure of
working.
Past Ph.D. Students
- Daniel Aliaga, PhD, UNC,
1999, now at Princeton. Dan worked on image-based impostors to
guarantee constant frame rate rendering.
- Mark Harris, PhD, UNC, 2003,
now at NVIDIA in London. Mark worked on simulation and rendering of
clouds, as well as general purpose computing on graphics processors (see his
gpgpu.org web site)
- Karl Hillesland, PhD, UNC,
2005, now at Electronic Arts in California
- Kok-Lim Low, PhD, UNC, 2006,
now a professor at the National University of Singapore
- David McAllister, PhD, UNC,
2002, now at NVIDIA. Dave worked on capture and representation of
surface-varying BRDFs.
- Carl Mueller PhD, 2000, now
at Nintendo. Carl researched the graphics architectures known as sort-first.
- Marc Olano, Ph.D., UNC, 1998,
now at UMBC. Marc worked on programmable shaders for interactive graphics
hardware.
- Voicu Popescu, Ph.D., UNC,
2001 now at Purdue University. Voicu worked on graphics architectures for
image-based rendering.
Past M.S. Students (some with thesis)
- Paul Keller (M.S., UNC, 1996), now at NVIDIA.
- John Houde (M.S., Duke, 1990), went to MIT for a PhD.
- Sandra Dawson Miller (M.S., Duke, 1990).
- Meredith "Merry" L. Smith (M.S., Duke, 1991), at IBM.
- Nathaniel Williams (M.S., UNC,
2004), now traveling
Current Graduate Students
Other Students
I didn't advise all of these folks, but I wrote papers with them or
supervised their RA work. The list isn't exhaustive. I can't hope to list them all,
but many others are on the Pixel-Planes project researchers
page.
- Rui Bastos, almost a PhD,
1999.
- Jon Cohen, (PhD, UNC) now at
Johns Hopkins.
- David Ellsworth (PhD, UNC), now at NASA Ames.
- Arthur Gregory, got his
bachelor's degree, is now on staff here at UNC.
- Merlin Hughes, who worked on quadratic interpolation. Merlin had his own
web business in Chapel Hill, but I haven't seen him for a while. Maybe he's
back in Ireland.
- Heather Kerns, undergrad on Pixel-Planes project, went to IBM in
Charlotte. Heather wrote the software for the joystick boxes that are in use
all over the graphics lab.
- Subodh Kumar (PhD, UNC), now
at Johns Hopkins.
- Jeff Mauldin. I worked with Jeff both as an undergrad at Duke and a grad
student at UNC. Amazing!
- Jon Leech, now at SGI.
- Bryon Nordquist, now at SGI.
- Eddie Saxe, was an undergrad working on Pixel-Planes, now in California.
- Yulan Wang, who rendered that cool bowling image that we used to symbolize
PixelFlow.
- Chris Wynn, now at NVIDIA.
