The deadline is November 30, 2009. I don't know how applicable this is to Comp Sci. They describe the program as follows.

The Rowland Junior Fellows are young experimentalists who have the opportunity to perform independent research under ideal conditions: a five year term, full salary, funding for start-up, operation, and a postdoc, help from technicians, and, best of all, full access to the Institute's shops and services. These Fellows are unusual people, with both good ideas and good hands. They are selected for their scientific achievement, their creativity, their resourcefulness as experimentalists and their ability to work independently.

See more detailed description at http://www.rowland.harvard.edu/rjf/images/RJF_2010.pdf

Job at academia.edu

Academia.edu is looking to hire a software engineer

About Academia.edu

Academia.edu helps academics answer the question ‘who’s researching what?’. It applies to any research area: you can type in ‘thermophilic organisms’, or one of 12,420 other research interests, and find out who is working in that area worldwide, as well as what they are working on – the latest papers, conferences, blog posts, status updates etc.

Our vision is for any researcher to be able to find out with one click the latest research that is going on in their area. We are firm believers that a research platform as powerful as this will exist in 5 years’ time, and we want to be the ones to build it. The goal is to impact people’s research lives as much as Facebook has impacted people’s social lives.

Academia.edu was founded by Richard Price. Richard did a Ph.D in philosophy at Oxford, and won the All Souls Prize fellowship there, awarded to two people a year. Richard previously founded www.peopleradar.com, which was the largest application on the Facebook API 1.0 for 8 months, and www.liveout.co.uk, a student rental site in Oxford. The other two members of the team are Ben Lund, CTO, and Jarques Pretorius, Lead Designer. More details about the team are on http://academia.edu/jobs.

Academia.edu launched 12 months ago, and is now one of the largest online communities of researchers in the world; we now have 63,900 profiles, and are growing by about 5,000 profiles a month. We have about 280,000 unique monthly visitors.

We are looking for an exceptional software engineer to join our team. Academia.edu has a very engineer-driven culture. We describe below how we think about our culture, and also the qualities of the person we want to join us.

Professional qualities – you are:

* A very talented engineer: you are able to innovate at the cutting edge of web development to overcome the complex challenges that can arise.

* Product and user experience focused: you are obsessed with creating a great product, and a great user experience. You feel anguish and pain when your site is slow, or when your user interface or feature is bad, and you feel pleasure when the site is fast and intuitive.

* A problem solver: you derive huge intellectual satisfaction from solving problems. You are always focused on finding the best and quickest solution to the problem you are working on.

* Technically ambitious: you are the kind of person who enjoys pushing the boundaries of the technologies you work with. For example, when thinking about the best UI for a feature, you would have no fear in considering creating a new JavaScript framework, if that is what is required to make it work right.

* A finisher: you care about finishing products and deploying code. You understand that exceptional engineering, combined with exceptional creativity, are what makes a startup succeed.

* Versatile: you are comfortable tweaking a CSS style or optimizing a SQL query all in the same morning

* Able to prioritize features: you can look at a ton of possible features on a whiteboard, be able to add your own ideas to the mix, and then intelligently choose which one has the highest priority

* Thoughtful about productivity: you think about what working environments and structures make you optimally productive. You try to ensure that the right environment and structures are in place for you.

* Dedicated: you are willing to get up at 4am to restart the servers, and then build something the next day so the servers don’t go down again

* Personally invested in what you work on: you care personally about the impact of your work on people around the world

For the full job requirements, please visit the job description at http://academia.edu/jobs/software_engineer

The job is based in San Francisco. On offer is a market salary and stock options. We want to hire someone exceptional, and will be generous with stock options to make this happen. In addition, you will also get health insurance, any ergonomic chair of your choosing, a laptop with two huge monitors, and a smartphone with monthly bills paid.

If you are interested to learn more, please email Richard Price at richard@academia.edu.

Lawrence Postdoctoral Fellowship

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has established the Lawrence Fellowship, a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship program. The website has been in development for 2.5 years, running live since late August, and has grown to over 15,000 users in that time and we are looking to rapidly expand in the coming months. This would be a great opportunity for students looking for advanced responsibilities not found this early at larger companies, the freedom to make creative decisions that influence the company, and the ability to get in on the ground floor of a company that is poised for 10x growth in the next few months.

Responsibilities:

So far almost all of the development has been done by outsourced programmers, so we are looking for an individual who can come in and learn the code on their own and after an initial ramp up period be able to make updates and add advanced features to the site. In addition to a fair amount of programming, this job could include: detailing out and designing new projects/features for the site, code/database optimization, load-testing and security checks. We would need applicants who are very experienced in: ASP.net, C#, AJAX, and MS SQL. Successful applicants will be able to quickly learn and adapt own their own to anything they don’t understand or know how to do as we will not have anyone who will be able to teach them. We are looking for someone to come in and start as soon as possible and work throughout the summer. Extraordinary performance will lead to a full-time offer.

If you have questions about position please contact:

Greg Myers by phone at: 919-636-3645 or by email at: Myersgg@gmail.com

Academic post in learning based vision (Edinburgh)

Informatics: Lectureship in Machine Learning

The School of Informatics of the University of Edinburgh invites applications from outstanding candidates in any area of machine learning (including computer vision/multimodal sensing, models, algorithms and applications) who will strengthen Scotland's position as an international research leader in informatics and computer science.

Recent investment by the Scottish Funding Council has enabled leading researchers across Scotland, including Informatics at Edinburgh, and groups and individuals at the Computer Science Departments of nine other institutions, to establish the Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (SICSA) http://www.sicsa.ac.uk. Watson Research Center Deadline Jan. 5, 2009

Goldstine Fellowship

2009-2010 IBM Herman Goldstine Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mathematical Sciences

The Business Analytics and Mathematical Sciences Department of the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center invites applications for its 2009-2010 Herman Goldstine Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowship for research in mathematical and computer sciences. The fellowship provides scientists of outstanding ability an opportunity to advance their scholarship as resident department members at the Research Center. The Research Center is located in Westchester County, less than an hour north of New York City.

The Business Analytics and Mathematical Sciences Department provides an atmosphere in which basic research is combined with work on technical problems arising in industry. Currently, about 110 permanent members, academic visitors, and post-doctoral fellows are pursuing research in pure and applied mathematics and in theoretical and exploratory computer science. Areas of research include: algorithms (approximation, randomized, and on-line); data mining (machine learning, pattern recognition, and computational statistics); dynamical systems and differential equations; high-performance computing (including scientific computing and parallel computing); numerical analysis; optimization (discrete, continuous, and stochastic); probability theory (stochastic models, risk management, queues and queueing networks); statistics (time-series, multivariate analysis, design, and reliability); and supply-chain and operations management (pricing, optimization and performance modeling).

Close interaction with permanent department members is expected, but fellows are free to pursue their own research interests.

One fellowship will be awarded. Candidates must have received a Ph.D. degree after September 2004 or should expect to receive one before the fellowship commences in the second half of 2009 (usually in September). The fellowship has a period of one year, and may be extended another year by mutual agreement. The stipend is expected to be between $95,000 and $115,000, depending on the area and length of experience. An additional allowance for moving expenses will be provided.

Applications will be accepted between October 15, 2008 and January 5, 2009 via e-mail only. For proper and timely handling of your application, it is essential that you carefully follow the submission instructions below.

The complete application must be sent as a single e-mail to goldpost@watson.ibm.com. The subject field of the application should contain the string "2009 Goldstine Application". The e-mail should have the following files attached. A cover letter is not required.

* Complete and attach the applicant profile (profile.txt).
* Attach your full CV.
* Attach the abstract of your Ph.D. dissertation.
* Prepare and attach a 2-3 page research statement describing your current research and the research plan that you would like to pursue if offered the fellowship .
* Finally, you may attach up to three of your most important papers. To facilitate handling, in the applicant profile (profile.txt), please give the names of the files/documents which contain your CV, Ph.D. dissertation abstract, research statement, and important papers.

Applicants are also responsible for arranging for three or more letters of recommendation, including one from the thesis advisor. The letters must be e-mailed to goldpost@watson.ibm.com, and should have "2009 Goldstine Recommendation Letter for <first name> <last name>" in the subject field, and must arrive before January 5, 2009. In the applicant profile (profile.txt), please give the names and email addresses of the people who will be writing recommendation letters on your behalf; automatically generated reminders will be sent to them.
A few selected applicants will later be asked to arrange for official transcripts listing graduate-level courses and grades received.

IBM is committed to work-place diversity, and is proud to be an equal-opportunity employer.

To print a color flyer of this announcement, click here.

Important information

Deadline: For fairness, and due to the fact that we start the evaluation process immediately after the deadline, the deadline is strictly enforced.

Attachments: We strongly prefer all documents in PDF format, but Word or PostScript documents will be accepted if you absolutely cannot generate them in PDF. If your mailer would not allow all attachments in a single message, you may create a compressed Unix tar file or a Windows zip file and attach that. While creating PostScript and/or PDF documents, please try to use fonts that facilitate on-screen reading. For example, including \usepackage{times} in your LaTeX document greatly improves the on-screen readability of the resulting PostScript or PDF document.

A cover letter is not required and it is not recommended to write any important information in the main body of the email containing the application package. You may use the "Additional information" area on the applicant profile to convey anything that has not been covered in the remainder of the application. If you wish to ask a question you need to send a separate message with "2009 Goldstine Query" in the subject line.

Research statement: This is typically a 2-3 page summary of your recent research, and further investigations that you are considering in the near future. The statement is very much an individual matter, and you may wish to consult with your advisor.

Response from IBM: We will contact you by e-mail to acknowledge your application, and later, to inform you of our decision. All applicants will eventually receive at least two responses.

Transcripts: U.S. universities typically issue an official transcript listing courses you took and the grades received. If your university does not issue such a transcript, please mention this in a letter and send it along with the closest equivalent you can provide without undue effort. There is no need to send the transcripts unless you are asked to do so.

Former Fellows
A partial list of former Goldstine Fellows (primary research area, current affiliation):

2006 Alexandre Belloni (Optimization, going to Duke Univ.)
2005 Retsef Levi (Scheduling and Algorithms, Supply Chain, MIT)
2004 Andrea Lodi (Integer Programming, Univ. of Bolgna)
2003 Petar Momcilovic (Stochastic Proc., Univ of Mich, Ann Arbor)
2002 John Langford (Machine Learning, Toyota Technological Institute at University of Chicago)
2002 Sanjeeb Dash (Integer Programming, IBM Research)
2001 Philippe Baptiste (Scheduling and Constraint Programming, Ecole Polytechnique, Paris)
2000 Moshe Lewenstein (Theory of Computation, Bar Ilan University)
1999 Xin Guo (Finance, Stochastic systems, Cornell)

A partial list of awardees of the Fellowship before it was named "Goldstine":

1998 Fabian Chudak (Combinatorial Optimization, ETH Zuerich)
1996 Chai Wah Wu (Dynamics, IBM)
1994 Patrick A.
