Tour du Mt. Blanc

Before going to the Graphics Hardware 2000 conference in Interlaken, Switzerland, I walked the Tour du Mt Blanc (TMB).  This is a trail that goes around the mountain and takes you to three countries: France, Italy, and Switzerland.  I went counterclockwise from Chamonix, to Courmayeur, to Champex, then back to Chamonix.  I thought of this trip at the last minute, so it was a race to arrange everything.  Distant Journeys set up my hotels (a self-guided trip) and I carried clothes in a pack.  You can easily do this trip by just showing up at refuges, but then you end up in dorms.

I flew to Geneva and took the train to Chamonix on August 5, 2000.  Unfortunately, the airline (British Air) lost my suitcase, so I was held up.  I waited a day, then decided to just buy the stuff I needed and get going.

Links and information about the TMB with scans of some hotel and refuge handouts, and an accommodations list from the Tourist Office of Chamonix.

After the TMB, I took the train to Zermatt  for a couple of days, and then to Interlaken for the conference.

In Interlaken I tried paragliding.  Click on image for some other pictures.
