My hosts were extremely hospitable. In addition to Marcelo taking care of me in Sao Paolo (see main page), Claudio Silva, a Brazilian who is a professor at Oregon Graduate Institute, showed me around a lot. It turns out that Claudio is a native of Fortaleza. I'm also grateful to his mother for a delicious dinner. Manuel Oliveira, a UNC grad, showed me around town. Finally, thanks to Creto Augusto Vidal, conference chair, who invited me and kindly made the arrangements, including my trip to Fernando de Noronha.
Just to prove that I actually did some work, here I am giving my invited talk (picture courtesy of Celso Kurashima).

Here's the UNC contingent at IMIGRA, from left to right: Manuel Oliveira, me, and Celso Kurashima.
I'm on the English Pier with the oceanfront of Fortaleza behind.
Above is Manuel de Oliveira Neto, UNC PhD grad who worked with our IBR group. Manuel is also a native of Fortaleza. This is in front of a market to which Manuel took me. We then strolled around and came on this bridge at the culture center.
It's not really as long as it looks...
Interesting illusion that also works when you're actually there.
This is the back (ocean side) of Pirata, a nightclub that's only open on Mondays. Claudio Silva took me there the night when the conference bused all who wanted. It's an incredible mob scene with people of all ages dancing. They had set aside a balcony for the conference attendees. It was the only place where you could get a little breathing room. The bands kept rotating so there was always music. Also some dancers on stage.
Below is the view down from my hotel window.
Finally, this is a statue on the beachfront.
