I went to Brazil to begin a collaboration with UNC alumnus Manuel Oliveira who is now at UFGRS in Porto Alegre. Manuel is at the lower right in the picture above. I spent several days enjoying the hospitality of Manuel and his colleagues. I then spent a day with Liuz Velho at IMPA in Rio de Janeiro. Before flying back to the US, I spent a long weekend at the Juma Lodge, in the Amazonia province, a few hours away from Manaus.
