Dear Ming:

I'm writing to ask your help in locating promising faculty candidates for several, perhaps as many as four, new faculty positions at Northwestern University. The published announcement is below, but let me emphasize my own interest in finding researchers in the areas of:

robotics, dynamics and control, human/machine interaction, haptics, teleoperation, design, neural engineering, or related fields.

The hiring departments are Mechanical, Civil, or Biomedical Engineering, individually or in combination as appropriate to the candidate. Our priority is on promising researchers, regardless of their doctoral discipline, seniority, or which department they join.

Please forward this notice to potential candidates, with an invitation to take a look at the research areas under study here. We are looking for top notch colleagues!

Sincerely,

Ed

Faculty: Joint Biomedical / Mechanical

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY is seeking a faculty member for a joint, tenure track position in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering in the area of neural engineering. Possible specialties include, but are not limited to, neural tissue engineering, brain-machine interfaces, robotics-assisted rehabilitation, and biocompatibility of neural implants. The two departments supervise approximately 160 graduate students, and graduate approximately 100 undergraduates per year from their ABET-accredited programs. The faculty member will also have extensive contact with the research and clinical personnel at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, a leading research hospital and a longtime partner of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern. The successful candidate will become part of a new education and research initiative in neural engineering at Northwestern University, funded in part by a Whitaker Foundation special opportunity grant. A number of additional hires are planned as we build a very strong nucleus in the area of neural engineering with particular emphasis on the restoration of human function. Rank of the current opening is dependent upon qualifications.

The candidate must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and a solid background in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering or a related area. Applicants should also have the ability to establish an independently funded research program and have a strong commitment to teaching in the undergraduate and graduate programs in the Departments of Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering. The starting date for the position is September 1, 2003. Application materials consisting of a resume, a statement of research and teaching interests, and the names, addresses and telephone numbers of at least three references should be sent to: Professor John Troy, Chair of the Search Committee, Biomedical Engineering Department, Northwestern University, 2145 Sheridan Road, Evanston, IL 60208-3107. Further information may be found at http://www.northwestern.edu/bme and http://www.mech.northwestern.edu. Applications should be received by December 15, 2002 to ensure full consideration.

Northwestern University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. Applications from women and under-represented minorities are encouraged. Hiring is contingent upon eligibility to work in the United States.
