About Me

I received my Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science at UNC in 1979 and am back here after retiring from IBM in June 2004.

I worked for IBM for 25 years and was named an IBM Fellow in 1994.  My work has revolved around networking and software engineering, including

developing networking protocols
deploying the network at the Nagano Olympics
development processes
storage networking
application development
mobile computing

I've worked in development, design, and architecture and two areas that I've become particularly interested in are improving quality and blending theory and practice.

My current research interests are focused on serious games, cheminformatics, virtualization, and web programming.

Other professional interests include

knowledge management
National Engineers Week
women in technology
improving ties between universities and industry
using technology to improve teleworking and remote teams

On a personal note, I have a daughter who is a second year law student at University of Richmond and my husband is a consultant. Outside of work and family (which also includes two cats), I work with the Piedmont Wildlife Center and enjoy travel. Our next adventure is Antarctica this coming December.
