How
To Use
the PC and
Projector in SN
011 |
|
|
|
|
|
a.
Here’s the info you need
(don’t skip any of it): |
|
User name: comp380. |
|
Password:
[If you didn’t write it down during class, you
must contact one of the
COMP 380 staff for it.] |
|
Log on to: Click
the drop-down arrow and select
SN011MAIN-CS (this
computer). You will not be able to log on to UNC-COMPSCI with this
user name. Now press OK. |
|
b.
It will take a few
minutes to load the right desktop features & MINDPATH software, so
be patient. You should now have
access to the local hard drive, as well as access to the Internet. The MINDPATH software that
auto-loads will enable you to use the remote mouse; more below… |
|
c.
When you get a message about Obtaining new AFS Tokens,
just press Cancel. |
|
d.
MINDPATH. If
the Mindpath window is still visible, you can minimize it (but don’t
close out of the application if you want to use the remote mouse). The remote mouse/pointer can be used to
advance your PowerPoint slides. Be sure
the receiver (red light) is facing in your direction
(the receiver is the small black object affixed in front of the
computer or desk, about the size of a computer mouse; ask if not sure.) I’m sure you’ve seen me use it often. |
|
e.
OK, you’ll find a shortcut to the COMP 380 Presentations Here
folder. Open the folder, and find your
section’s folder. This is where you should
store your PowerPoint files. Be
sure your filenames are unique to your team so you don’t
inadvertently replace another (i.e., if everyone names their file comp380.ppt, we’re in trouble. §
NOTE: If you bring your Powerpoint files on a USB
flash drive (a/k/a
thumb drive; flash memory drive; jump drive; pen drive; key drive), NOTE that
there’s a USB two-port hub sitting on the desk that you may use, which
may be more convenient. |
|
f.
If you need SOUND,
be sure the volume settings are not muted or turned too low. (Click on the Volume icon in the system
tray—looks like a tiny speaker). |
|
|
|
The MAIN SCREEN has seven control buttons
along the top. The purpose for each button
should be obvious, but those you will need to use are
explained here: |
|
§
Press the LIGHTS Button: Press the ALL ON button
first, then press the INDIVIDUAL DIMMER CONTROL button at the bottom of
the screen. From there, use the down
arrows to turn OFF the Ovhd Fluoro lights and the Board Fluoro lights. That
setting works pretty well; however, feel free to experiment. We caution you not to set it too dark.

§
Press the PROJ Button:
Press
the POWER ON buttons for both the Front Project and Rear Projector. That should also bring the screens down
automatically. (Note that should you need
the white board behind the front screen, you can control the screen
from the SCREEN button.) o
WARNING: Do not
turn off the projectors until you are sure you are finished and no one
is waiting. It takes a full 3
min to power them back on. |
|
o
CLASSROOM PC: For both the Front and
Rear Projectors, press the COMPUTER 1 buttons, respectively. Check to see that both are displayed on
the screens. [If it’s stubborn, toggle
again by pressing another setting—like COMPUTER 2—and
press the COMPUTER 1 button again, firmly.] |
|
o
NOTEBOOK PC.
For both the Front and
Rear Projectors, press the NOTEBOOK buttons, respectively.
Check to see that both are displayed on the screens. |
|
§
If your notebook’s
desktop image is not coming up on the screens: hold down the
Fn key [on your keyboard] WHILE you hold down the F7 key. |
|
§
Press the AUDIO Button: Press the control button
to increase or decrease volume, as you need to while you test your
slides, videos, etc. |
|
5.
BEFORE you leave! If no one else is waiting
to use the equipment: |
|
§
Log
off of the classroom PC if
you used it (do not shut it down), and |
|
§
Press “System Reset” button on the
Control Panel. |
|
If you run into problems,
the TSC Help Desk is located at SN 130 (or dial extension 1872 from the classroom phone). Also feel free to try my office number first: 1816. If you
can’t find any of us, walk over to David Musick’s office (0 level
hallway, right near the classroom if you exit the side door), in SN
1772 and see if he can help. Finally, try
Linda Houseman at 1758. IDENTIFY yourself
as a COMP 380 student. |
|
|
|
NOTE: The PC includes the Office 2003
suite, Internet access, & a DVD-ROM player; and the classroom has a
VCR. The
room also has an overhead projector. |
