Dr. Etta Pisano, Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering and Chief of Breast Imaging, is the PI of this project, which is funded by the National Library of Medicine.
This system will be used to annotate cases for the training and testing of radiologists who interpret mammograms at Univ. of Chicago, Univ. of Pennsylvania, Univ. of Toronto and UNC initially.
This will allow radiologists to use a large resource, the National Digital Mammography Archive, which will make use of Next Generation Internet Technology. This is a new use of the internet that allows training programs to pool their resources (available training cases), and allows radiologists to be tested in a larger number of cases that is much more similar to that which they will eventually have to face in a busy clinical practice.
The annotated cases will be used for teaching/training/testing at the above schools. The system may be used nationally if it works well for the above institutes. Actually, we are developing the teaching/training tool and testing tool besides the annotation tool in the proposal.
