These are traffic bounds

• These models bound (rather than exactly characterize) traffic

• Can obtain several different bounds (in the same model) for any traffic source

  • trade off burstiness (the si value) against bandwidth share (the ri value)

• More burstiness: larger (worst-case) delays; more jitter

• More bandwidth: lower overall utilization; future connections more likely to be rejected
