CSE 624, Spring 2011: Advanced Operating Systems
Presentation Instructions
All students will present one paper in class.
Please send email to Don Porter by the end of the first week of class
with your top three preferences for
papers to present. Don will aggregate the requests and make the final
assignment. If
you have questions, please ask.
Presentation format
For your assigned paper:
- Please prepare a 15 minute presentation, uninterrupted. There will
be no interruptions during the presentation.
- We are going to enforce the 15 minute limit strictly, so you may
wish to practice with a clock to ensure that your presentation will meet the
timing constraint.
- Please try to bring out interesting issues in the paper during your
presentation, rather than just summarizing it. Everyone should have
read the paper and should not need summary.
- Issues may include, but
are not limited to:
technical objections or concerns, particularly interesting material
in the paper, relevant background material the
class likely has seen before that clarifies the paper, and
careful explanation of particularly difficult parts of the paper
with visual aids. When in doubt whether something is sufficiently
interesting, ask.
- As part of your presentation, please try to state your opinion of
two strengths and two weaknesses of the paper.
- Don will lead the discussion after the presentation, so you
do not need to plan discussion questions. If, however, there are
questions that you would like to bring out, please do so either during
the discussion or by emailing us the questions ahead of class.
Speaking advice
Mike Dahlin has collected a lot of
useful advice for researchers. Check it out! The "good talk" and
"bad talk" links might be especially useful.
Don't copy!
If you use your own slides, which is fine, please send them
to us afterward. Please do not look at other presentations that you
might find on the Web; you may be tempted to copy, lift, or borrow
from them, thereby violating the university's academic integrity rules.
