The Evolution of Quality-of-Service on the Internet

A colloquium given by Kevin Jeffay at Maelardalen Hogskola, Vaesteras, Sweden in February 2001.

Abstract: Throughout the last ten years the problem of providing a better delivery service for the Internet than the original best-effort service has been at the forefront of the networking research community. Throughout this time the requirements and proposed technologies have evolved from those supporting delay and bandwidth guarantees to those simply providing a so- called better-than-best-effort service. In talk I'll survey the major currents and themes in quality-of-service research for the Internet over the last ten years with an emphasis on the technologies that are likely to be deployed in the near future.
