I submitted a grade of B for everyone because I have so little to go on. You’ll all have plenty of opportunity to bring it up.

Autism related study at TEACCH

Friday, October 5th, 2007

I got this notice of an interesting sounding study over at the amazing TEACCH center. I hope to get someone from there to come talk to us later this semester. The study sounds interesting and pays $20 too. If anyone participates I’d love to hear about the experience.

Deafness and the meaning of disability.

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

With Charley Finley’s lecture today we’re beginning a unit on deafness, Deaf culture, ethics, and the meaning of disability. I hope you will find the topic interesting and thought provoking. I encourage you to pay close attention to the discussion and explore resources elsewhere because your next assignment will be writing a paper on your reaction to the topic. You may find it useful to take some notes to remind you of the aspects you found most interesting.

Next class we’ll watch “Sound and Fury”. Wow.

Get Firefox!

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

I’m a lousy speller. I see that some of you are too. Yikes!

I suggest you get the Firefox browser free online. It is a great browser with lots of cool features like AdBlock (download the Add On) and tabbed browsing. But possibly its greatest feature is built-in spell checking for all text fields. So when you’re posting comments to our blog your misspelled words will be underlined in red and you can fix them before posting.

Help with a user study?

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

CS graduate student Peter Parente is doing his thesis research on a new kind of audio display that improves on screen readers like JAWS. He needs three more participants in the sighted part of his study. It pays $20 for 2 hours of work. A requirement is an interest in mobile audio such as iPod and basic email skills. If you’re willing to help out, let me know and I’ll give you Pete’s email address.
